Claude – From Zero To Hero

Claude is an AI assistant from Anthropic that most people use for maybe 5% of what it can actually do: a quick question, a drafted email, and nothing else. This guide walks through everything from your first conversation to the advanced features (Projects, Artifacts, Memory, and Claude Code) that turn it from a chatbot into an actual daily tool.

What Is Claude?

Claude is a conversational AI you can use through a chat interface (web, desktop, or mobile), similar in feel to ChatGPT but with a particular strength in writing, document work, and coding. It’s built by Anthropic and comes in several model tiers — Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise — with the more advanced tiers unlocking longer conversations and extra tools.

At its simplest, it’s a text box: you type, Claude replies. But the real value shows up once you move past single questions and start using its Projects, Artifacts, and Memory features, covered below.

Getting Started: Your First Conversation

Anyone can open Claude and start typing — there’s no setup required. A few things make the first conversations noticeably better:

• Be specific. “Write me a workout plan” gets a generic answer. “Write me a 4-day workout plan for someone who can only use dumbbells” gets a usable one.
• Give it context upfront. Mention your goal, your constraints, and your skill level in the same message instead of drip-feeding it over five follow-ups.
• Treat it like a conversation, not a search query. You can push back, ask it to try again differently, or say “make this shorter” — it remembers everything said earlier in that same chat.

If you stop here, you’re already using Claude better than most people ever do.

Claude Projects: Stop Repeating Yourself

Projects are dedicated workspaces where you upload reference material once – documents, notes, guidelines – and every conversation inside that project automatically has that context. No more re-explaining who you are and what you’re working on every single chat.

To create one:

1. Go to the Projects tab in Claude
2. Click + New Project and name it
3. Upload relevant files to the project’s knowledge base
4. Start chatting inside the project – Claude already knows the background

Projects are available on every plan, including free accounts (capped at five projects on the free tier). This is the single highest-leverage feature for anyone using Claude for recurring work.

Claude Artifacts: Build, Don’t Just Ask

Artifacts open substantial pieces of content – code, documents, spreadsheets, web pages – in their own window next to the chat, instead of dumping them into the conversation as plain text. This is what makes Claude feel less like a Q&A tool and more like a builder.

Practical ways people use Artifacts:

• Turning a plain-English description into a working script or webpage
• Drafting a document or report you can keep refining without losing earlier versions
• Prototyping a small tool (a calculator, a tracker, a simple app) without writing any code yourself

You don’t need coding knowledge to get value here. Describe what’s broken or what you want changed in plain language, and Claude edits the artifact directly.

Claude’s Memory: Context That Carries Over

Claude can now remember context across separate conversations, not just within one chat. It automatically summarizes what you talk about and uses that to personalize future conversations, so you stop repeating your job, your preferences, and your ongoing projects every time you open a new window.

Two things worth knowing:

• Memory can be paused or fully reset from Settings
• Incognito chats (the ghost icon) let you have a conversation Claude won’t remember at all, useful for one-off or sensitive topics

Power User Tools: Web Search, Research, and Claude Code

Once the basics feel natural, a few tools separate casual users from power users:

• Web search lets Claude pull current information instead of relying only on its training data – essential for anything time-sensitive.
• Research mode digs across many sources for genuinely deep questions, instead of a single quick answer.
• Claude Code lets Claude work directly inside your own coding projects and repositories.
• Cowork hands off longer, multi-step tasks that keep running in the background, even after you close your laptop.

None of these need to be learned all at once – add one at a time as you hit a real limitation in what you’re currently doing. And don’t forget, AI is the only tool that can tell you how to use it, just ask it.
